Happy New Moon in Virgo!

I recently had an Aha! Moment (yes, another one), when I realized why we have seasons.

Growing up in school, I learned that Spring begins on March 20th, Summer is June 21st, Winter is December 21st, and Fall is September 23rd.

Clearly I was running my mouth in class, because I didn’t think these dates meant anything.  I assumed that these dates were random, because in my experience, Winter doesn’t get cold until January. I also grew up in Miami, Florida, where the seasons didn’t change, but that’s another story. At the time, I would think, “how could this be the longest day of the year? Every day has 24 hours!”

D’oh!

To prepare for my presentation at this month’s Empowered Modern Witches Summit, I’ve been going deep into my studies of  seasons and celestial (heavenly) cycles. I now understand that the Spring and Fall Equinoxes happen when the hours of daylight equal the hours of night. The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, and the Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year.

My other revelation was that, as each season is three months long, our astrological seasons are actually SUB-seasons!

Modalities of Astrology

The first signs of a season are Cardinal Signs, which brings fresh energy to a season. Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are Cardinal Signs.

The middle signs of a season are Fixed. Fixed signs capitalize on the ideas of the cardinal signs, and dig in. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are Fixed Signs

The last signs of a season are Mutable. Mutable signs are the signs of transition. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

These descriptions (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) are known as modalities, and apply to the personalities of the people born under these Sun signs.

Cardinal signs are leaders, Fixed signs are determined, and Mutable signs are flexible.

However, these modalities ALSO apply to the vibe of the season. Now that the New Moon in Virgo season has arrived, we are hearing less and less about “Hot Witch Summer” in the Northern Hemisphere, and more about going back to school, and getting back to business. This is a time of transition, so you may be decluttering, or thinking about your health or diet.

I’m quite aware of this as my Virgo husband has been organizing (and re-organizing) the house. And he insisted that we get our eyes checked, so I now have new glasses for distance.

We have an Equinox coming up on September 23rd. In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the first day of Fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the first day of Spring. Wherever you are in the world, day and night will be coming into balance again.

New Moon in Virgo asks us to be flexible, and to get ourselves ready for the next season.

By the way, I’ll be teaching “Secrets of Your Celestial Cycles” during the Empowered Modern Witches Summit, which takes place Sept. 20-24, 2021. Over the course of a week there will be 15 diverse teachers, discussing everything from intuitive astrology and lunar bath magic to sensual embodiment and seasonal journaling.
